What step should we follow to backup the oracle 9i database to get full recovery

we have oracle 9i database but after crash down of server we are unable to get full recovery of database. will you pls advice us what is the best practice we follow to backing up our oracle 9i database so in near future if same problem persist we can able to get full recovery of database.

Additional Details
we have only one real time server which we are using for backing up our oracle database.we do not have any specific back up server. so what type of good back up practice we follow which will able to give full recovery.awating for your reply.
